This past weekend, I played in a tennis tournament and have also been in my competitive season since the end of April. I have won only one match the entire two months. One. Match. Does this make me a loser? I haven’t given up. I fight through every single match to the end. Sometimes I play singles, and sometimes I have a partner. We don’t stop and don’t give up, no matter the score. I will tell you, though, it’s not always easy to keep getting on the court. It’s not always easy coming off the court knowing I lost again.
So what I know is this. I am not a loser. I am a competitor. That means I don’t give up. It means that sometimes I cry and sometimes I scream. And I always come back. Always. The season has been extremely difficult for me mentally. Do you know what I do? I call my tennis coach. I have another lesson. I attend all our drills. I keep going. Because every time, I am learning. I am doing things right, and I am making decisions that may not execute perfectly, but I have the right tools and am trying to use them.
Isn’t business like this? We try things and fail. We’re told no. People don’t show up to things we offer. We lack certain skills. But the truth is, we must stay in the game. We must look at ourselves as competitors, not as winners or losers. Yes, sometimes we win, but many times we also lose. But what are we learning? What are we improving on? How are we getting better? This is the only way to
keep on going , along with HIRING COACHES who will support you and help you fill the gaps that are left open. Believe it or not, we cannot do this on our own. We can’t actually do anything on our own. We need support. We need accountability. We need someone who knows more than we do and who has been there.
I usually end these newsletters with tips, but I feel like I’ve said it all.
- Keep going; stay in the game. Not blindly but noticing what you’re missing and making shifts.
- Hire a coach. Someone who can fill in gaps you’re missing and who is where you want to be. They know more than you! Use it to your advantage.
- Be a competitor. Not with anyone else. But with yourself. How are you improving? Where can you make a shift? Where do you know what you need and want to do but are just missing the mark. Hone that in! It’ll come.
Most of all, remember, we’re not losers, and we’re not losing. We are out here doing the THING. We are doing what a minimum number or people are doing or even have the courage to do.
